Waymo’s Firefly — The World’s First Driverless Drive
The Firefly was designed from the ground up to be a fully autonomous prototype for Waymo to experiment and learn with. Firefly’s interior experience was optimized for riders, not drivers, with a spacious cabin that focused on comfort. There was no steering wheel or pedals. With Firefly, Waymo solved some of the earliest autonomous driving challenges, such as how to integrate its technology into a car, and, in Austin, Texas, in 2015, achieved the world’s first fully autonomous ride with no one behind the wheel on public roads.
