Don’t Fix What Ain’t Broken

Motor racing can advance technology in two ways: incremental progress or radical change. The 1968 Indianapolis 500 exemplified this with fierce competition between the conventional yet highly refined piston-powered AAR Eagle 68 and the radical turbine-powered Lotus 56. The turbine car led most of the race but ultimately suffered reliability issues with just nine laps remaining, ceding victory to the #3 Eagle 68 driven by Bobby Unser. This victory spotlighted the critical nature of reliability in automotive engineering and the role of racing as a stress test for new technologies.
