A “Mod Rod” Trendsetter

Artist and custom car builder Ed “Big Daddy” Roth rose to celebrity status in the car-crazed youth culture of the 1960s, reinventing the custom car aesthetic with wild, fiberglass bodied fantasy hot rods. The Outlaw was Roth’s first custom automobile and was built in part to help promote his expanding T-shirt business. While a 1949 Cadillac engine was used for power, its one-of-a-kind body was specially molded in fiberglass. Its original design helped thrust Roth to the forefront of the “mod rod” movement.
