Zagato’s EV Micro-Elcar

The Zele 1000, sold as the Elcar in America, was an electric microcar designed by Italian coachbuilder Zagato. The vehicle was introduced at the 1972 Geneva Motor Show, presented as an urban car with zero environmental impact, and entered production in 1974, shortly after the onset of the oil crisis. The “1000” designation stood for the wattage of its motor (“1500” and “2000” models were also produced). The Zele’s boxy body was constructed of fiberglass, and its suspension was derived from the Fiat 124 and 500.
