That’s America’s Chevy!

Frank Calderon of Salinas, California, first had his Chevrolet Fleetline “Captain ‘42” decorated with a red-and-blue paint scheme and adorned with murals of the Marvel comic book character Captain America when it won 2nd place for Bomb of the Year (a category for American cars from the 1930s through 1950s) at the Lowrider Super Show in 2018. Calderon then had the paint job updated, still superhero-themed and with additional airbrushed murals of military scenes painted by Tim Lowery and inspired by Calderon’s father’s naval service in World War II. The upgrade helped it to secure the show’s Bomb of the Year title for the following three years. Owners will frequently redo their vehicles’ appearance or add more decorative elements to score higher points at lowrider car shows and make them more competitive.

Additional awards garnered by “Captain ‘42” include Original Lowrider’s Bomb of the Year, which it won twice, as well as Bomb of the Year at Impalas magazine’s first Super Show in 2023.
