The Spirit of Le Mans
John Greenwood started modifying Corvettes while in his teens in the 1960s. A successful driver and engineer, he was best known for developing custom widebody Corvettes in the 1970s. Arguably the most famous Greenwood Corvette, “The Spirit of Le Mans” was built prior to the 1976 season to race in IMSA and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. At Le Mans, Greenwood qualified the No. 76 Corvette ninth overall, but the car ran just 29 laps before being eliminated by a fuel leak. Its presence, though–the roaring engine, wild looks, and 222-mph run down the Mulsanne Straight, made an unforgettable impression on European race fans.
