Ancestor of the 718 Boxster
The 550 Spyder was Porsche’s first model designed specifically for racing. With its mid-mounted 1.5-liter engine and light aluminum bodywork, it quickly became an icon on racetracks worldwide, especially in America. Although highly successful, it was notoriously difficult to drive. Midway through 1957, Porsche produced a much-improved successor, the 718 RSK. It was lighter, more aerodynamic, and most importantly, had a vastly superior suspension giving it a softer and less skittish ride. This example was purchased from the factory by privateer Roy Schechter in 1959 for $8,000 ($82,000 in 2023). It proved a worthwhile investment for the Porsche dealership owner. Schechter finished on the podium in six of the ten races he entered in it.
