Carbon Fiber Compact

After over 40 years of EV development, BMW unveiled the i3 concept car in 2011, marking the debut of its new “i” sub-brand.  The vehicle features a carbon-fiber passenger cell atop an aluminum chassis, which houses the electric motor, batteries, and an optional 647-cc two-cylinder gasoline “Range Extender.” While consumer EVs were in their infancy, BMW brought to market a refined product. This achievement is reflected in its position as the best-selling compact electric car, with over 250,000 sold by the time production ended in 2022.
