Keeping it Strictly Business: Winning Shows and Setting Trends

Manuel Corbala’s “Strictly Business” was just the second vehicle to win Lowrider’s Lowrider of the Year title three times and was the first to do so consecutively, from 1997 to 1999. The car features a frame-off customizing job; its body has been completely transformed, with a Targa-style top and suicide doors. The hood opens to the side to reveal the painted engine block and gold-plated valve covers adorned with engraved filigree. At car shows, the hood is displayed separately to showcase the custom mural on the underside—a scene by artist Steve Fernandes.

“Strictly Business” remains popular at lowrider shows more than two decades after its first appearance. Corbala, from Merced, California, says of the car’s enduring appeal: “It was considered ahead of its time, especially the paint. The paint job is the style that they’re doing now, more than 20 years later.”
