Arriving Back to the Future in Decadence

The stylish DMC-12 debuted in 1981 as the first vehicle sold by the DeLorean Motor Company, founded by former GM executive John DeLorean in the 1970s. Intended as a cultural counterpoint to the cars made by the major American automakers, the DMC-12 was designed to be distinctive and durable and to incorporate advanced safety features and technologies. Its striking angular styling, created by notable Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, featured flamboyant accents like gullwing doors, a sporty low profile, and a unique corrosion-resistant stainless steel finish. This example, created for an American Express promotion, was one of three DMC-12s plated in 24-karat gold.
