About the Exhibit

A Legacy of Excellence

Spanning the early to mid-20th century, the Mullin Collection documented an era of profound technological transformation that saw the emergence of the first airplanes, radio broadcasts, and motion pictures. Much like the fine artists with whom they were contemporary, automotive pioneers interpreted this rapidly changing world. The bold vehicles they created provided owners with an exciting new means of self-expression. The cars on view here highlight some of the most celebrated examples of their designs.

These vehicles were generously donated to the Petersen by the Peter W. Mullin Family Charitable Foundation, preserving the legacy of the Mullin Automotive Museum collection.

“IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN” — Peter W. Mullin

A Legacy of Excellence - Image 1
Some regard the automobile as a means of transportation. Peter Mullin saw it as sculpture in motion, and he dreamt of assembling a world-class collection of those voluptuous, streamlined examples of haute design. Together, Peter and Merle, as stewards of these rarest of rare automobiles, created the Mullin Automotive Museum to showcase and share examples of the brilliant convergence of art, industry, technology, and design, from what Peter believed to be the boldest aesthetic movement of the 20th century—the period known as Art Deco. Peter dreamt that, upon his passing, the Petersen Automotive Museum would become the steward of the collection.

The Petersen proudly shares with you, here, some of the rare rolling sculptures from the Mullin Collection.
