HOT RODS & CUSTOMS

Few vehicles evoke the spirit of Southern California motoring like hot rods and customs. Though they were familiar to only a small number of enthusiasts before World War II, postwar magazines such as Hot Rod and Rod and Custom helped popularize them among teenagers, young adults, and returning servicemen anxious to apply the mechanical and fabrication skills they learned in the military.
Eager to transform their cars (preferably 1932 Fords or 1949-51 Mercurys) into low slung street sleds and highway scorching performance machines, these aficionados used aftermarket equipment to create a near infinite variety of vehicles that, while top performers, also served to express their talents and highly individual styles. Now embraced as a means of expression by individuality-seeking enthusiasts everywhere, hot rods and customs are revered for their grace, workmanship, and rugged beauty.
