1972 AAR Indy Olsonite Eagle #6
Under Chief Designer Roman Slobodynskj, AAR produced a prototype racecar that demonstrated how strategically placed wings could generate extreme downforce at high speeds. The short-stroke Offenhauser engine, prepared by John Miller, used grooved and lightened pistons. Relative to changes in USAC rules, the wheels were moved out to provide the greatest span for the front and rear wings. The fastest car of 1972, it broke the track record at Indianapolis by 18 miles per hour, still the largest gain in the history of the Speedway.
