Corvette XP-87 Stingray

Striking Stingray

The Stingray was born out of then-Vice President of Design Bill Mitchell’s desire to build a Corvette racecar capable of beating Europe’s best. Due to the Automobile Manufacturers Association ban on manufacturer-sponsored racing, Mitchell was forced to fund the project privately and as a result, the car was initially intended for racetracks only. The car performed well and GM executives expressed interest in showcasing the vehicle, leading Mitchell and the design team to alter it for personal use.
