The first M3 was introduced in 1985, based on the second-generation 3 Series (E30). BMW developed the roadgoing and racing versions together in order to satisfy the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile’s (FIA) Group A rules, which required building 5,000 roadgoing examples. Because FIA Group A rules required the roadgoing M3 to closely resemble its racing version, the car received a high-performance engine, transmission, rear axle, suspension, and steering upgrades over the standard E30 3 Series. Flared fenders, side skirts, front and rear air dams, and a more dramatically sloped rear window all contributed to improving the car’s aerodynamics for racing. In its first year, the racing M3 won the European and World Touring Car Championships, as well as the DTM, quickly establishing it as a dominant force in motorsports. This example was campaigned by Team Bigazzi in the 1992 DTM season and represents the E30 M3 in its purest racing form.
